Pasadena, CA - Renewable Energy Accountability Project (REAP) is launching an all volunteer Ironing Board Brigade to take to the streets to talk to neighbors about getting Pasadena off of dirty-coal sooner rather than later. The Ironing Board Brigade is a part of REAP’s End Dirty Coal public awareness campaign.

“By demonstrating bold leadership, Pasadena can lead California into a clean energy future. The time has come for Pasadena to end -- once and for all -- its use of dirty-coal to generate electricity,” said Jim Gonzalez, Chair of the Renewable Energy Accountability Project.

Facts about Pasadena’s overreliance on dirty coal:
  • Pasadena, through its municipally-owned utility – Pasadena Water and Power – currently obtains 59% of its electricity by burning dirty-coal.
  • Pasadena retains a 4.4% ownership interest in the Intermountain Coal Plant, located in Millard County Utah.
  • Intermountain Power Plant is listed among the worst 50 coal plants out of the 614 existing coal plants in the United States.
  • In mid-October 2009, REAP launched a public awareness campaign in Pasadena to fully inform residents of the harmful effects of burning dirty-coal to generate electricity.

As REAP’s End Dirty Coal Project in Pasadena moves forward, it will continue to feature volunteer Ironing Board Brigades, town hall meetings and house meeting discussions to involve the community in seeking reasonable and effective clean energy solutions.
