AB 920 Update
November 9, 2009
Sacramento, CA - On October 11, 2009 Assembly Bill 920 (Huffman) was signed into law. AB 920 expands the current net-metering programs for wind and solar, to allow customers to sell any excess electricity they produce within a year to their electric utility.
Currently, owners of solar systems are only “credited” for the amount of energy they consume, the electric utilities are then permitted to use the surplus renewable energy without compensating the owners. Under AB 920 renewable energy owners will now receive a check from the utility for the surplus generation, up to 1 MW in size that the electric utility uses. Assemblymember Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) believes this legislation will encourage homeowners and businesses to conserve more electricity in order to sell their surplus power to the utilities.
The amount of net surplus electricity a utility must purchase is capped at 2.5% of each utility’s cumulative peak demand.
